Summer Safety Tips - Summer Heat

We all look forward to the warm months of summer, getting outside, and all of the activities that come along with it. However, it can go from warm, to hot, to dangerous...very quickly! For children and elderly members of our community, it can be especially dangerous if you're not aware and taking precautions.

 Surviving Summer Heat

Stay inside! On those especially hot days where the heat index and humidity are super high, being indoors in the A/C may be the best option. If you have to run errands or do outside work around the yard, plan to do it early in the morning or in the evening.

Hydrate! Drink lots of water throughout the day. During hot summer months you may not be fully aware of how much you are perspiring. Even if you are in a pool or ocean, you can still be losing body fluids through sweat. If eight 8 ounce glasses of water a day is the recommended average, you need to be drinking much more during the hot active days.

Dress for success! Light weight light colored clothing made of natural fibers is going to keep you much cooler. A hat that has good ventilation and a nice brim to keep the sun off your face and neck is a great option as well.

Cool off! If you're not going to spend all of your time indoors, consider a cool shower if and when you feel your body overheating. Keeping a cold compress or a wet towel around to apply to your face, neck, and arms can help cool you down.

Eat light! Put the heavy foods on the shelf. Replace or stick with lighter refreshing meals and foods instead of hot heavy meals that can add to the discomfort.
