Protecting Your Boat in the Off-Season: Security Tips for Quiet Marinas

Written by Wells Insurance | Dec 16, 2025 8:09:40 PM

As activity slows down in the winter months, marinas and public ramps naturally become quieter. While this creates a relaxing atmosphere for the few who continue boating, it also means fewer eyes on the docks and more opportunity for theft or vandalism. A few smart steps now can help protect your investment until the season picks up again.

Remove High-Value Electronics

Portable chart plotters, fish finders, and handheld radios should be stored at home during extended periods off the water. Thieves look for quick items they can grab and resell, and electronics are at the top of the list. If you cannot remove a device, take photos of serial numbers so they are documented for insurance purposes.

Secure the Boat and Trailer

If your boat is stored on a trailer, use a reliable hitch lock and wheel lock. Boats stored in the water should have cabin locks, console locks, or at minimum a hidden kill switch or battery disconnect. The goal is to make your boat less appealing than others around it.

Check Lighting and Camera Coverage

Many marinas have cameras, but they are only useful if your boat is within view. Consider asking the marina staff about their surveillance coverage and lighting schedules. If your boat sits in a darker corner of the dock, ask whether a different slip is available for the winter months.

Remove Valuables and Personal Gear

Fishing rods, coolers, tackle bags, life jackets, and even basic tools can be targets. Store items at home that you do not want to replace.

Do a Monthly Walkthrough

Even if you are not boating this time of year, visit your slip at least once a month. Check dock lines, ensure the bilge pump is functioning, and inspect for signs of tampering or entry. Regular presence is one of the best deterrents.

Review Your Insurance Coverage

Winter is an ideal time to make sure your policy is up to date. If you have added gear over the last year or upgraded electronics, contact us and confirm they are listed and properly covered.

The off-season is quiet, but it should not leave your boat unprotected. A few proactive steps can help you avoid frustration and keep your vessel secure all winter long.
