Most people think there are four seasons in a calendar year, but for those of us that live on the east coast there is a fifth season that spans six months...Hurricane Season. From Saturday, June 1st to Saturday, November 30th is the North Atlantic Hurricane Season. A long six months of eager anticipation for some (mainly east coast surfers) and anxiety for others (coastal business and home owners). At the time of writing this article, we have already seen three tropical waves form and it's not even June yet. Each year Colorado State University (CSU) puts out prediction statement based on decades of historical weather data and observations. It's looking like it may be a big year for us, so the most important things we can do is prepare and plan so if and when a storm is approaching, we can feel confident that we are ready and there is no need for last minute panicking.
Assess specific risks - Make sure you know your hurricane exposures. The particular location of a home can determine wind and flood hazards.
Have a plan - Establishing a hurricane response plan & practicing it is vital and should include evacuation routes & nearby emergency shelters.
Create A Kit - Individuals should also keep a hurricane kit fully stocked with proper supplies including nonperishable food, water, medicine, emergency power sources, a first-aid kit and important documents.
Make Home Adjustments - To minimize possible damages, it’s best for individuals to clear their yards of any items that could get blown around during a hurricane, as well as protect their windows and doors by installing storm shutters. Vehicles should also be stored in safe and secure locations.
Maintain Coverage - Lastly, individuals should review their homeowners policies with trusted insurance professionals to ensure sufficient coverage in the event of a hurricane.
Now would be a very poignant time to discuss "THE BOX". If you are considering purchasing any personal property this season that would require insurance or a renewal, such as your home, don't wait until a tropical disturbance is in "the box". When the latitude and longitude of the center of circulation is within the walls of this square, no new or increased coverage can be bound by the NCJUA and NCIUA. In short, insurance policies can't be written. If you know you have a purchase, a renewal, or need to increase/add coverage coming up this summer, reach out immediately to your insurance agent.
